Transportation Policy Director

The Transportation Policy Director is a senior level management position which directs the Leadership Group's transportation and land use policy initiatives and programs. The Director provides key staff support to the Leadership Group's transportation policy committee and the organization generally in areas of public policy development, strategic planning, legislative advocacy and program initiatives related to transportation and land use.  

Responsibilities  

Provide leadership and staff support to the transportation policy committee. Duties include meeting planning, facilitation, leadership development, policy analysis and coordination of work programs.  
 
On an annual basis, work with the committee and membership to establish the Leadership Group's transportation-related legislative, policy and program priorities. Identify measurable outcomes and issue champions.  
 
Carry out research and analysis on issues related to transportation policy, including but not limited to improving California 's transportation infrastructure, addressing the state's infrastructure funding shortfall, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging transit-oriented development. Identify policy positions, programmatic activities, and initiatives to advance the organization's priorities and the strategies necessary to achieve those objectives.  
 
Advocate effectively for the Leadership Group's policy positions by developing and maintaining relationships with key policy makers, community leaders, and organizations, and identifying opportunities to partner on issues of mutual interest.  
 
Assist in communicating the Leadership Group's transportation and land use priorities, successes and activities to the broader community by, among other things, drafting op eds, writing the transportation section of the Leadership Group's annual Projections report, and representing the Leadership Group at meetings and conferences and on community taskforces, committees, boards and organizations as appropriate.  
 
Actively involve member companies in the Leadership Group's policy and program initiatives. Staff committee co-chairs and board members as they make presentations and advocate for transportation issues on behalf of the Leadership Group.  

Skills  

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to prepare memos, reports and letters quickly that are thorough and factually correct.   
 
Broad knowledge and experience in the public policy process and politics.  
 
Strong organizational skills, ability to facilitate meetings, organize events, and build excellent working relationships with elected officials, professional staff, community groups and policy makers. Ability to engender collaboration among diverse groups. 
 
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.  
  
Ability to manage staff, coordinators (student interns) and executive volunteers  

About our team  

We are a dynamic, passionate team where everyone pitches in and supports organizational priorities and events. This will include staffing high-profile events, participation in advocacy trips with city, county, and state leaders, and participation in various organization-sponsored gatherings. This may include some early morning and evening engagements.   
 
Our offices are based in San Jose within walking distance of the airport, Guadalupe River Trail, and public transit. 

Compensation 

The salary range, based on experience and transportation policy expertise, is $60,000 to $85,000 annually.  Excellent benefits include health, vision, dental, 401(k), transit pass, and subsidized fitness center. 

 

Associate, Education & Health Policy

The Associate will be responsible for supporting the membership of the organization and its senior policy staff on K-12, higher education, and health policy, with a special emphasis on early childhood education policy and K-8 education linkages. The Associate provides staff support to the Silicon Valley Leadership Group's ("Leadership Group's") Education Committee and Health Policy Committee, as well as to other internal and external programmatic and policy initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

Provide staff support to the Leadership Group's policy staff and Education and Health Policy Committees. (These committees are composed of liaisons from Leadership Group member companies.) Duties include researching and preparing meeting materials; conducting policy analysis; making presentations; scheduling meetings and meeting facilitation.

Carry out research and analysis on local, state, and/or federal issues related to education and health policy, including but not limited to early childhood education; student achievement and teacher professional development in math and science; higher education; and universal health care and health care cost containment. Help identify policy positions, programmatic activities, and initiatives to advance the organization's priorities and the strategies necessary to achieve those objectives.

In the area of early childhood education (ECE) policy, Associate will provide staff support to the Preschool Business Advisory Committee; serve as a lead business liaison concerning local ECE initiatives and partnerships, as appropriate; continue to build strategic partnerships within the business community on the issue.

Where directed, advance the Leadership Group's policy positions by developing and maintaining relationships with key policy makers, community leaders, and organizations, and identifying opportunities to partner on issues of mutual interest.

Provide staff support to Leadership Group program initiatives, including its math teacher training initiative, Silicon Valley: A Laboratory for Learning

On an annual basis, work with senior Leadership Group staff, committee members and the membership at-large to establish the Leadership Group's early childhood education, K-12 and higher education, and health policy and program priorities. Assist in the identification of measurable outcomes and issue champions.

Assist in communicating the Leadership Group's policy priorities, successes and activities to the broader community by, among other things, drafting internal and/or external memoranda and letters; maintaining the content of the Leadership Group's website; and by representing the Leadership Group at meetings and conferences and on community task forces, committees, boards and organizations as appropriate.

Actively involve member companies in the Leadership Group's policy and program initiatives. Provide direct and indirect staff support to committee co-chairs and to board members as they make presentations and advocate for education and health policy priorities on behalf of the Leadership Group.

Help to direct interns ("coordinators") and volunteers, as appropriate, to advance the goals and objectives of the organization.

Provide general office support as needed

Skills

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to prepare memos, reports and letters quickly that are thorough and factually correct.

Knowledge of grant writing and grant management process.

Knowledge and experience in the public policy process.

Strong organizational skills; ability to organize events and facilitate meetings and to build excellent working relationships with internal staff and member companies, elected officials, professional staff, community groups and other policy makers.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; ability to manage student interns ("coordinators") and volunteers

Salary & Benefits

$35,000 to $45,000 – Based on experience
