Silicon Valley is home to more than half of the world’s biggest technology businesses. As the “Capital of Silicon Valley,”  San Jose and its airport is a convenient location for many Silicon Valley travelers. There are over a hundred companies representing $350 billion in annual sales that are located within 18 miles of San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC). SJC currently offers its patrons and passengers world class amenities such as free Wi-Fi, ample seating with built in power outlets, and an excellent variety of shops and restaurants. The airport was honored in June 2010 with an LEED Silver Certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) further demonstrating its environmental sustainability while capable of handling international flight services.

San Jose Mineta International Airport also has an exceptional on-time performance record. Located in San Jose with excellent weather, ample airfield capacity, and dual runways provide SJC with one of the best on time performance records of any US airport.

The Leadership Group is working with San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and Airport Director Bill Sherry on identifying ways to increase the number and frequency of flights to San Jose Mineta International Airport.

The Leadership Group formed a CEO Airport Task Force composed of Silicon Valley executives who want to strengthen the service at San Jose International Airport. A survey of the Leadership Group’s more than 345 members in March of 2011 identified 4 top domestic destinations and 2 top international destinations for business travel.

Top Domestic Destinations:

  1. New York
  2. Washington D.C
  3. Chicago
  4. Boston

Top International Destinations:

  1. Tokyo
  2. London

The Airport Task Force is working with airline executives on attracting flights to these top destinations from San Jose. As part of this work, the Leadership Group had started a seat banking program where small and mid-sized businesses have the opportunity to support the SJC by forming a booking consortium that receives a modest discount in exchange for a commitment to support an airline.

Part of this work is gathering information about the frequency and class of flights that small and mid-sized businesses take. If you are with a small or mid-sized company, please help us by filling out this survey on travel demand at Zoomerang.
